How to stop grinding teeth?
Grinding your teeth is both unhealthy and ill mannered. The sound of it distracts other people and may cause them to throw you meaningful stares. If it has been a habit, then you probably have been doing it for a while and you just do not realize it. So how to stop grinding teeth? First, you have to determine what causes it and most importantly, how to stop it. There may be a number of reasons why you grind your teeth, whether you do this at night or during the day. It is important that you find out why you have this for a habit. But you should not wait to determine the reason before you do something to get rid of it. The earlier you start to “treat” it, the sooner you will avoid having serious health issues because of it. That should be enough reason for you to stop. Bruxism or teeth grinding wears and tears your teeth and this results to cavities, worn-down enamel and even serious dental damage.
What are the possible causes why people grind their teeth? It may be a response to stress or due to reflex actions. The alignment of the teeth and your jaw structure may also be a cause. Most of the people who have braces, malocclusion or uneven dental structure are inclined to grind their teeth. Another reason could be insomnia, if you are not getting enough sleep or rests then you are prone to bruxism as well.
Get some adequate sleep to avoid grinding your teeth. If you grind your teeth especially at night, your body is telling you that you are not getting the rest that you need. Try to get at least six to eight hours of sleep a day because you need it to recover the energy that you have lost throughout your daily activities. It is also important that you do not force yourself to sleep, wait for your body’s signal to do so. Moreover, avoid drinking alcoholic beverages to help you sleep. Studies have shown that alcohol messes with your nervous receptors and therefore changes your reflexes and nervous responses. Lastly, establish a sleeping pattern. It is imperative that you get a restful sleep to lessen your body tensions that may result to teeth grinding.
